My First Love

I was 12 going on 13 when I met him. Before we met, I had already heard so much about him. Hence I was sort of intrigued even though I didn’t know what to make of him. He seemed larger than life, and didn’t sound like the kind of person I would want to relate closely with. I think I may have even dreaded meeting him. Then on this day, during the Easter vacation, I went to an event with my family, and he was there.

He came to me, began a conversation with me, and instantly, we had this connection. He was nothing like what I had expected. He was as real and down to earth as anyone could be, someone you could really talk with. With him, I felt known, loved and valued in a way that I had never experienced before. And I fell for him. Everything changed. We began a relationship, but it wasn’t always smooth. My earlier impression of him and my perception of life often got in the way of our relationship. Also, I was young and didn’t know him well enough to trust him or believe the things he said and the promises he made to me.

Over time, my heart sometimes drifted and was cold towards him but he refused to let go of me. Every time I tried to walk away, he relentlessly pursued me and wooed me back with his love. So I quit trying to leave and yielded to him. He became a major part of the decisions I took through the years. There’s so much I could write about this relationship and the influence it’s had on me, my life, the choices I have made, and the person I have become. I look back today and see how that single encounter with this Person shaped the entire trajectory of my life.

Where is he now? Where he has been through the years and will always be – right within my heart! You see, I am talking about no-one else but Jesus. He was, he is, and will always be my first love. I am happily betrothed to him in love forever (Hosea 2:19-20)! My relationship with him has given meaning to my life and brought me untold joy, peace, fulfilment and everything I could ever desire! It’s because of his love that I have been blessed with my amazing U, awesome foursome, fabulous family, fantastic friends and blessings too many to count.

It’s now over three decades since that day we first met, and I know him much better now than I did as a little girl of 12. The better I know him, the more I trust him, and the deeper I fall in love with him. Today, I just wanted to say to someone, if you are looking for love or something more in life, I would like to introduce you to my first love. If you met him, I bet you would fall for him, too! ❤️
